Meningitis Update 19/03/2026

We understand recent news about a meningitis outbreak may be worrying. We’d like to reassure you and provide clear information about vaccination and what this means for your family.

MenB Vaccination (Babies)

Some cases in the current outbreak have been identified as MenB.

The MenB vaccine is part of the routine NHS childhood programme and is offered at:

  • 8 weeks
  • 12 weeks
  • 1 year

This vaccine provides important protection for babies and young children.

Older Children & Adults

The MenB vaccine is not routinely offered to older children or adults on the NHS unless there is specific public health advice.

Teenagers – MenACWY Vaccine

The MenACWY vaccine (protecting against four types of meningitis) is routinely given in school Year 9 (age 13–14).
If this was missed, it can still be given free on the NHS up to age 25.

During the Current Outbreak

At this time, we are only able to offer vaccinations in line with the national NHS immunisation schedule.
Public health teams will contact individuals directly if additional vaccines or antibiotics are needed due to close contact with a case.

While meningitis is serious, cases remain rare, and the NHS and public health teams are actively managing the situation.
